A 19-year-old youth was stabbed to death at the Kovilpatti bus stand in Thoothukudi district following a dispute related to a love affair. Police arrested three persons, including the girl’s father, in connection with the murder.
The deceased was identified as Sanjay, son of Manickam, from Karadikulam near Kalugumalai. Police said Sanjay was in love with a 17-year-old girl from Kechilapuram.
The girl’s father Kumar reportedly opposed the relationship and had sent his daughter to stay at the house of his younger brother Marimuthu in Kovilpatti.
On Saturday night, Sanjay arrived at the new bus stand in Kovilpatti along with his friends to leave for Chennai. At that time, Kumar, Marimuthu, relative Sankaranarayanan and others allegedly approached Sanjay and took him aside for talks.
During the discussion, a quarrel broke out and the trio allegedly attacked Sanjay with knives. Marimuthu also sustained injuries during the incident.
Kovilpatti West police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured Sanjay and Marimuthu to the Government Hospital in Kovilpatti. Sanjay was later referred to the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, where he died on Sunday.
Police investigations revealed that the girl had allegedly contacted Sanjay over the phone assuring him of marriage before he was attacked near the bus stand.
Police arrested Kumar, Marimuthu and Sankaranarayanan in connection with the murder case.
