Chennai Division of Southern Railway has planted more than 800 saplings and removed 16 tonnes of plastic waste during a three-week environmental campaign organised in connection with World Environment Day 2026.
A major plantation drive was conducted at Jolarpettai Railway Colony, where over 500 saplings were planted under the leadership of Dr. I. Senthil Kumar, Additional Divisional Railway Manager.
Railway officers and staff actively participated in the initiative.
At Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station, an environmental awareness programme was held, during which railway employees, housekeeping staff and passengers took an environmental pledge. Eco-friendly jute bags were also distributed to promote sustainable practices. The campaign, held from May 15 to June 5, saw the participation of more than 1,300 railway employees and contract workers.
As many as 131 awareness rallies and programmes were conducted across stations, colonies, offices and workshops. The Division also strengthened efforts to curb single-use plastics and improve waste segregation. Educational institutions and youth organisations joined awareness activities at Melmaruvathur and Katpadi railway stations, supporting Indian Railways’ vision of a cleaner and greener transportation system.
