The Coimbatore zonal-level Judo selection trials for college students, organised by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI), were held at Angel Engineering College on Dharapuram Road in Tiruppur.
Students from six districts — Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, Namakkal and Ooty — participated in the selection trials. Kamalakkannan, Additional Director (Panchayat & Audit) of Tiruppur District, inaugurated the event.
Raghu Kumar, District Sports and Youth Welfare Officer, and Mahendran, District Physical Education Inspector, presided over the proceedings. The event was organised by Murali, Tiruppur District Judo Coach. A total of 142 male athletes and 98 female athletes participated in the competition, which was conducted by a panel of 15 referees. Competitions were held in six weight categories for male students — Under 60kg, Under 66kg, Under 73kg, Under 81kg, Under 90kg and Above 90kg — and six categories for female students — Under 48kg, Under 52kg, Under 57kg, Under 63kg, Under 70kg and Above 70kg.
Four athletes from each weight category were selected to participate in the state-level competitions.
