Fishermen rescue elephant calf swept away in Teesta river

A video showing local fishermen rescuing a baby elephant that was swept away by strong currents in the Teesta river in West Bengal has gone viral.
The incident occurred near Gajoldoba when the Teesta river witnessed a sudden rise in water level. A female elephant was standing near the river with a calf that was only three to four days old.
The calf was swept away by the strong current. The mother elephant reportedly stood helplessly as it was unable to rescue the calf.
After learning about the incident, officials of the Baikunthapur Forest Division and local fishermen immediately set out in a boat to rescue the calf.
The elephant calf had reportedly been carried nearly five kilometres downstream. The fishermen managed to reach the struggling calf, rescued it from the water and pulled it into the boat.
They carefully placed the calf safely inside the boat and brought it towards the riverbank.
The calf was provided veterinary treatment and was later reunited with its mother.
A video of the dramatic rescue and the reunion has since gone viral on social media.
