AAI conducts Awareness programme on Garbage Dumping, Bird Strike Hazard

AAI Coimbatore Airport and Coimbatore Corporation Conduct Joint Awareness Programme on Garbage Dumping and Bird Strike Hazard.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI), Coimbatore Airport, in association with Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation, conducted an Airfield Environment Management Committee (AEMC) awareness programme at Poonga Nagar, Ward No. 23, in the vicinity of Coimbatore Airport, to sensitise local residents and stakeholders about the adverse impact of illegal dumping of garbage and food waste near the airport boundary.
The programme focused on the link between improper waste disposal and increased bird activity in the vicinity of the airport, which can pose a potential bird-strike hazard to aircraft and affect the safety of flight operations.
AAI officials explained the aviation safety concerns associated with bird congregation near the airport and urged residents to avoid dumping garbage and food waste in areas surrounding the airport. Officials from the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation also highlighted the importance of proper waste disposal and maintaining cleanliness in the locality. Representatives from airlines participated in the programme and shared operational perspectives on bird-strike incidents and their implications for safe aircraft operations, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts among the airport, civic authorities, airlines and local communities.
As part of the awareness programme, pamphlets highlighting the aviation safety hazards associated with garbage and food-waste dumping, particularly the resultant increase in bird activity, were distributed to local residents and establishments such as bakeries, messes and other commercial premises in the vicinity of the airport. The joint initiative underscored the need for sustained cooperation between AAI, Coimbatore Corporation and the local community to prevent garbage dumping, reduce bird activity and strengthen wildlife hazard management around Coimbatore Airport. The awareness programme was followed by a meeting involving AAI officials and civic authorities, along with a joint inspection of areas in the vicinity of the airport to identify potential sources of bird attraction and reinforce preventive measures.
