A 15-year-old female elephant was found dead on Saturday evening in the Thanikpangaadu area of the Nilgiri Eastern Slope Reserve Forest, within the Pethikuttai section of the Sirumugai Forest Range in the Coimbatore Forest Division under the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.
The Forest Department officials informed the District Forest Officer of the Coimbatore Forest Division about the elephant carcass.
Following the instructions of the District Forest Officer, a post-mortem examination was conducted at around noon on Sunday as per prescribed guidelines. The procedure was carried out under the supervision of the Assistant Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Forest Division, in the presence of the Sirumugai Forest Range Officer and forest staff, TNWCCB forest officials, volunteers from Osai and Earth Foundation, and veterinarians Dr. Vijayaraghavan of the Wildlife Translocation and Treatment Centre, Pethikuttai, and Dr. Sivagurunathan, Assistant Veterinary Surgeon, Therampalayam.
Samples were collected during the post-mortem examination and sent to a laboratory for further analysis. Following the advice of the veterinarians, the elephant carcass was left at the spot to serve as food for other wild animals.
