Merchants from various trade organisations in Dindigul district staged a protest near the Head Post Office here on Thursday demanding the Central government to withdraw the Merchant Discount Rate charges on specific UPI transactions.

The traders sent e-postcards to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman urging the government to withdraw the charges. More than 50 traders and office bearers of various trade organisations in the district participated in the protest and raised slogans condemning the government’s decision to impose charges on UPI transactions.

They said levying charges on UPI transactions would severely affect the traders and the public across all sectors. Their livelihood would be affected, they said. They added that if their demand was not accepted and the charges withdrawn, the protests would be intensified.
