Yesterday, a case was being heard in the Supreme Court before Chief Justice of India (CJI) P.R. Gavai. When P.R. Gavai started the hearing of a case, an advocate named Rakesh Kishore tried to throw a shoe at him. But it fell in front of the court.
As the shoe-thrower was immediately escorted out of the courtroom, he shouted, “India will not tolerate insults to Sanatana Dharma.” The incident created a stir in the Supreme Court.
However, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, PR Gavai, remained calm and said, “Don’t be distracted. I am not distracted by this incident.” He also asked the lawyers to continue their arguments.
The case of the headless statue of Khajura temple in Madhya Pradesh was heard before Gavai. Chief Justice Gavai had said that people should ask God to change the statue. This drew severe criticism. Following this, it was reported that a person tried to throw a shoe in protest against the Chief Justice’s speech.
Following this, Gavai clarified that his views were misrepresented and that he respects all religions. Even after this, the shoe-throwing incident is still seen as an attack on democracy. This is condemned not only by all party leaders but also by the entire country.
Prime Minister Modi has strongly condemned the incident. There can be no other way to condemn it, saying that the attack on the Chief Justice has angered every Indian.
Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi has rightly condemned it as an “attack on the dignity of our judiciary and the spirit of our Constitution.” Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has advised that the entire nation should stand in solidarity with the Chief Justice.
Similarly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who has condemned the incident, said, “The Chief Justice’s calm and magnanimous reaction to this shows the strength of the judiciary,” and praised Chief Justice P.R. Gavai for handling the issue in a responsible manner.
This incident is not just an attack on the Chief Justice; it is an attack on our Constitution. Chief Justice Gavai behaved with great dignity. Not only the calmness he displayed in the face of the situation, but also his determination to uphold the values of justice deserves much praise.
But this incident should not have happened. The nation stands united in support of the Chief Justice with deep sorrow and anger.
There is no doubt that the Supreme Court of our country continues to function impartially, regardless of caste, religion, or political party. Because of the right to criticize judgments, many people on social media have resorted to slandering not only the judgments but also the judges and their families.
The culmination of this is the shoe being thrown at the Chief Justice himself. There should be limits to criticism. There are so many legitimate democratic ways to express dissent. It is shameful that a lawyer, despite all that, is throwing shoes at the Chief Justice with the slogan of Sanatana; we will strongly condemn it!
Shoe throwing incident on CJI is highly condemnable
