Tension prevailed in the Palacode area of Dharmapuri district after a protest against the opening of a private liquor bar under the name ‘Manamagizh Mandram’ turned violent on Monday.
The protest was organised by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) condemning the opening of the private bar and demanding its immediate closure. The agitation was led by District Secretary Thapa Siva. Protesters raised slogans opposing the Tamil Nadu government’s move to open 12 private liquor bars in Dharmapuri district and thousands across the state, and also demanded the closure of TASMAC shops and bars.
During the protest, TVK leaders and cadres attempted to forcibly enter the private liquor bar and stage a road blockade. Defying police restrictions, some cadres broke open the door and entered the premises, shouting slogans against the government and the police.
An argument soon broke out between the police and the protesters, leading to a scuffle. During the commotion, a TVK cadre bit the hand of Mahendramangalam police constable Arul, who was attempting to prevent the road blockade. Fortunately, the policeman escaped without serious injury.
Following this, the protesters sat in front of the bar and staged a sit-in protest. Police later arrested 105 protesters, including 16 women. They were taken to a nearby private marriage hall and released in the evening.
Meanwhile, a video showing a TVK cadre biting the hand of a police officer went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.
Subsequently, police arrested a TVK cadre named Gemini, who was involved in the biting incident. Five more TVK cadres were also arrested for assaulting police personnel during the protest. Further investigation is underway.
