A massive 6-foot swordfish was unexpectedly hauled ashore near Pamban in the Gulf of Mannar on Thursday, drawing attention from local fishermen and residents. The fish, weighing around 25 kg, was caught in the net of fisherman Pamban Arulanandam during a routine fishing
trip.
The rare catch was sold for Rs 250 per kg, totalling Rs 6,250, officials said.
Fishermen described the swordfish—popularly referred to as “Peacock Fish” due to its striking, fin-like extensions—as one of the fastest species in the ocean, capable of swimming at speeds close to 100 km per hour. They believe the fish may have entered the Gulf of Mannar for breeding, as the species is typically abundant in the wider Indian Ocean.
Known for hunting alone, the swordfish uses its sharp, blade-like snout to slash at prey. Fishermen also cautioned that the fish can pose a danger at sea, sometimes leaping out of the water and striking boats, causing serious injuries.
With an astonishing lifetime migration of nearly 2 lakh kilometres, swordfish are notoriously hard to track and catch—making Thursday’s haul all the more remarkable, they
added.
