72 HOUSES INAUGURATED UNDER KALAIGNAR KANAVU ILLAM SCHEME IN KULASEKARAPURAM

A total of 72 newly constructed houses under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Project were inaugurated today at Kulasekarapuram village in the Kovilpatti Panchayat Union of Thoothukudi district. Each house, built at a cost of ₹3.5 lakh, fulfills the long-cherished dream of providing safe and dignified housing for rural families.

The event was presided over by District Collector K. Elambahavath, IAS, in the presence of Additional Collector (Rural Development) Selvi R. Ishwarya, IAS. Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan inaugurated the newly completed houses, lit the ceremonial lamp, and unveiled the commemorative plaque.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Geetha Jeevan said that 1,673 houses were completed in Thoothukudi district during 2024–25, including 72 houses in Kulasekarapuram, and that construction of 1,700 more houses is currently in progress across the district for the financial year 2025–26 under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme.

In addition to the houses, basic infrastructure facilities such as streetlights, drinking water tanks, roads, and pipelines have been developed at a cost of Rs 88.22 lakh, providing comprehensive amenities to the residents of the newly developed area.

A cheerful moment marked the event when District Collector K. Elambahavath took a selfie with Minister Geetha Jeevan and the new homeowners, drawing smiles and applause from the gathered beneficiaries.

The event was attended by senior district officials including Sub-Collector Himanshu Mangal, Tahsildar Balasubramanian, Kovilpatti Panchayat Union Commissioner Muthukumar, Block Development Officer (Village Panchayat) Stephen Rathinakumar, Assistant Engineer Sankara Subramanian, Work Supervisor Panneerselvam, and Panchayat Secretary Srinivasan, along with Kovilpatti Municipal Chairman Karunanidhi, former Panchayat Council Chairperson Kasthuri Subbaraj, former District Panchayat Committee member Thangamariyammal Tamilselvan, Village Administrative Officer Nagalakshmi, and various public representatives and DMK functionaries.

The Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme, launched by the Tamil Nadu Government under the leadership of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, aims to provide permanent housing to the economically weaker sections of society, ensuring that every deserving family has a safe home with essential amenities and access to basic services.
