In a heartwarming and inspiring development ahead of the Kerala local body elections, 90-year-old Narayanan Nair, a retired government employee, is contesting an election for the very first time.
Narayanan is standing as an independent candidate from the 2nd ward of Ashamannur Gram Panchayat in Ernakulam district.
While most candidates campaign with party workers and large groups of supporters, Narayanan follows a simple and humble routine — walking alone from house to house, dressed in a white shirt, dhoti and carrying a black handbag.
When asked whether his age poses any challenge, Narayanan smiles confidently. “Age is not a barrier to anything,” he says, adding that his mission is to contribute meaningfully to the development of his ward.
He believes in direct communication rather than posters and banners. “Even wedding invitations are meaningful only when given in person.
Meeting people directly creates a connection,” he explains. His straightforward approach and sincerity have earned admiration from voters.
The Kerala local body elections will be held in two phases on December 9 and 11, with counting scheduled for December 13.
Narayanan’s spirited participation at the age of 90 has turned him into a symbol of dedication and democratic enthusiasm, drawing widespread appreciation across the region.
