The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption has arrested Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora on charges of accumulating assets far beyond her known sources of income during her six years in service.
Bora, a 2019 batch officer currently serving as Circle Officer of Goroimari in Kamrup district, earlier worked in Barpeta district, where she allegedly facilitated illegal transfers of land belonging to Hindu families to other communities. Complaints regarding her activities were submitted to the Chief Minister’s Office.
Acting on the reports, anti-corruption officials raided her residences in Guwahati and Barpeta. According to SP Rosy Kalita, the searches led to the seizure of ₹92 lakh in cash and gold and diamond jewellery worth lakhs. Investigators also found that Bora owned two apartments in Guwahati’s Kahilipara area.
Searches were simultaneously carried out at the premises of Surajit Deka, a Lat Mandal in Barpeta, who is alleged to have assisted her in the land transfer dealings.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the case exposed corruption in minority-dominated areas and reiterated that his government would act firmly against officials misusing their positions.
The action comes shortly after the Assam Assembly approved a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) mandating police clearance for the transfer of land from Hindus to other communities, citing security concerns.
