Director General of Police and Head of the Tamil Nadu Police, Shankar Jiwal, honoured auto driver Murugan with a cash reward and commendation for his alertness and timely action in rescuing a minor girl who was allegedly being abducted near Chennai Central Railway Station.
According to a police release, the girl’s family had arrived in Chennai from Tiruchi on July 1 after completing agricultural work and was waiting outside the railway station for their train the following morning. Around 3 a.m. on July 2, the girl’s father found that his younger daughter was missing and began searching for her.
At the same time, Murugan noticed a man taking the girl away while speaking a different language. Suspecting foul play, he stopped the man, questioned him and, finding his replies unsatisfactory, rescued the child and immediately alerted patrolling police personnel.
The police safely reunited the girl with her parents and arrested Sasikumar (45). A case was registered at G2 Periamet Police Station, and the accused was remanded in judicial custody. The DGP praised Murugan’s courage and civic responsibility, describing his action as an exemplary instance of public vigilance supporting effective policing.
