A baby elephant was found dead after falling into an open well on a farmland near Cherupuzha in Kannur district of Kerala, raising fresh concerns over frequent wildlife intrusion into agricultural areas.
The incident occurred on land owned by Mahesh, 38, a farmer from the Josegiri area near Cherupuzha. Unaware of the incident initially, Mahesh noticed that no water was coming from the tap connected to the well on Thursday.
On inspecting the well, he discovered the carcass of a baby elephant inside the 20-foot-deep structure.
He immediately alerted the forest department. Officials from the Cherupuzha forest range rushed to the spot and recovered the body of the elephant. A team of veterinarians later conducted a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Forest department officials said preliminary findings suggest that the elephant accidentally slipped into the unprotected well and died. A detailed investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident and to assess whether adequate safety measures were in place.
The incident comes amid a series of reports of wild elephants straying into human habitations and farmlands in parts of Kannur district over the past few days, causing crop damage and anxiety among residents.
Local farmers have urged the forest department to take urgent preventive measures, including securing open wells and strengthening barriers, to prevent wild animals from entering agricultural lands and to avoid such tragic incidents in the future.
