In a chilling triple murder that has shocked Chennai, police have revealed that a Bihar youth whose body was found stuffed in a sack at Indira Nagar in Adyar was brutally murdered along with his wife and two-year-old son. Five men from Bihar have been arrested in connection with the crime.
On January 26, the body of a young man bearing severe cut injuries was discovered inside a sack abandoned on First Avenue Road, Indira Nagar. CCTV footage from the area showed two youths arriving on a motorcycle and dumping the sack, leading police to intensify their investigation.
Police identified the victim as Gaurav Kumar, 24, from Bihar. Subsequent inquiry led to the arrest of Sikandar, 33, Narendra Kumar, 45, Rabindranath Thakur, 45, and Vikash, 24. During sustained interrogation, the accused confessed that Gaurav’s wife Munitha Kumari, 22, and their two-year-old son Birmani Kumar were also murdered.
According to police, Gaurav had earlier worked as a private security guard in Sriperumbudur but lost his job and returned to Bihar. He later came to Chennai on January 21 with his family after being promised employment by a friend. He was subsequently accommodated by Sikandar in a private building near Taramani Polytechnic.
On the day of the incident, Sikandar and two associates, after consuming alcohol, allegedly attempted to sexually assault Munitha Kumari. When Gaurav intervened, he was attacked with an iron rod and killed. Munitha Kumari was also assaulted and died on the spot. Their crying child was killed by being dashed against a wall.
The bodies were packed in separate sacks. The child’s body was dumped into the Buckingham Canal and later recovered. Munitha Kumari’s body was allegedly dumped at the Perungudi garbage yard, where search operations using heavy machinery are continuing. Gaurav’s body was abandoned at Indira Nagar after the sack tore due to its weight.
The gruesome killing of an entire family has sent shockwaves across the city.
