A series of bomb threat emails sent to multiple prominent locations in Chennai late last night triggered widespread alarm, prompting swift action by the police. The threats, which turned out to be hoaxes, targeted seven key places, including the residence of MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi.
According to police sources, the anonymous sender had emailed bomb threats to several addresses, including Kanimozhi’s residence at C.I.D. Colony, Auditor S. Gurumurthy’s house in Mylapore, former DGP R. Nataraj’s residence, Narada Gana Sabha in Alwarpet, Periyar Thidal in Vepery, the ISKCON Temple on East Coast Road, and the Teynampet Metro Rail Station.
Upon receiving the alerts, bomb detection and disposal squads, assisted by local police, conducted thorough searches at all the mentioned sites. After extensive inspection, officials confirmed that no explosives were found, and the messages were false alarms.
Meanwhile, police traced a phone call threat made to the Teynampet Metro Station and detained a youth from Sriperumbudur for questioning. Sources said the man’s mobile number was linked to one of the suspicious calls made on the same night.
However, the cybercrime investigation team believes that the email threats were sent by a different individual and are currently tracking the digital footprint of the sender.
Officials have stated that similar email-based bomb threats have been received multiple times in recent weeks, targeting public places and prominent figures, including political leaders and senior officials.
While investigations are underway, police have tightened security at all key government offices, metro stations, and religious places across Chennai. Authorities have urged citizens to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
