Panic gripped the Combined Court Complex near the District Collector’s office, after an e-mail claimed that RDX bombs had been planted inside the premises.
The mail, received at 6:48 a.m. in the court’s official account, warned that explosives had been placed at specific locations and would detonate within two hours.
On behalf of the District Court, a complaint was lodged at the C2 Race Course Police Station. Immediately, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad rushed to the spot with sniffer dogs and metal detectors. Intensive checks were carried out in courtrooms, office buildings, parking lots, storage areas, and toilets.
After several hours of search operations, police confirmed that no explosives were found. The threat was declared a hoax, bringing relief to thousands of advocates, staff, and the public at the complex.
Nearly 4,000 lawyers practice in the court, which houses several judicial offices including the Sessions and Additional Sessions Courts. The false alarm caused widespread concern during morning hours before the situation was brought under control.
Police said the Cyber Crime Wing has begun tracing the origin of the threat mail.
Notably, Coimbatore has witnessed a spate of such e-mail threats in recent weeks, targeting the District Collectorate, airport, schools, and the passport office—all of which proved to be false.
Following today’s incident, tight security arrangements were put in place at the District Court Complex, with visitors and litigants allowed entry only after thorough checks.
