A 53-year-old lathe workshop owner from Coimbatore, who was declared brain dead following a road accident, gave a new lease of life to six persons through organ donation.
Sathasivam, a resident of Chinniyampalayam on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore, is survived by his wife Gomathi and son
Haresh.
According to hospital sources, Sathasivam met with an accident near the Perundurai Toll Gate on the night of May 24.
He was initially admitted to a nearby Government hospital for first aid treatment and was later shifted to KMCH, Avinashi Road, Coimbatore, for specialised treatment.
Despite intensive medical care, he did not respond to treatment and was declared brain dead on May 28.
In a noble gesture, Gomathi and Haresh consented to donate Sathasivam’s organs to help save the lives of others.
A team of multi-organ transplant surgeons at KMCH harvested the liver, kidneys, eyes and skin in accordance with the guidelines of the Transplant Authority of the Government of Tamil Nadu.
The liver and kidneys were transplanted at KMCH, while the eyes and skin were sent to a private hospital in Coimbatore for transplantation procedures.
Family members expressed pride that Sathasivam’s organs would help improve and save the lives of six needy persons.
Appreciating the family’s decision, Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami, Chairman of KMCH, thanked them for their timely and courageous gesture towards organ donation.
He said the noble act would help create greater awareness about organ donation among the public.
