The Department of History at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women organised a Coin Exhibition on February 19 in association with numismatist L. Krishnaswamy, aiming to enrich students’ understanding of India’s monetary and cultural heritage.
The exhibition displayed an extensive collection of coins from various historical periods, including the Chola dynasty, Medieval Sultanate era, Colonial rule and post-Independence India. Rare and nostalgic coins such as 50 paise and 1 paise denominations drew significant interest among students and faculty members.
L. Krishnaswamy offered valuable insights into the evolution of coinage, explaining the political, economic and artistic dimensions reflected in coins across different eras. He highlighted how inscriptions, symbols and designs serve as historical records of governance, trade and culture.
More than 1,000 students participated in the exhibition, making it a grand success. The event provided a unique experiential learning platform by connecting classroom knowledge with tangible historical artefacts.
Faculty organisers noted that the exhibition deepened historical awareness and fostered appreciation for India’s rich numismatic legacy and its role in understanding the nation’s past.
