The weather system over the Bay of Bengal continued to strengthen this afternoon, with the deep depression intensifying into a low-pressure area and triggering a renewed surge in the northeast monsoon across Tamil Nadu.
After heavy rain battered 18 districts yesterday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh warning for widespread showers over the next two days.
A new low-pressure formation is developing over the Kumari Sea and adjoining Sri Lanka–Southwest Bay of Bengal, which the IMD says is likely to intensify steadily. The emerging system has been named ‘Senyaar’, and forecasts indicate it could evolve into a cyclonic storm within 48 hours.
In its afternoon bulletin, the Meteorological Department confirmed that the deep depression in the South Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a depression. Officials caution that the system may gain further momentum as it moves northwest, bringing heavy to very heavy rain to several coastal and interior districts.
Fishermen have been advised to stay ashore as sea conditions are expected to turn increasingly rough due to strong winds associated with the developing cyclone. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as monsoon activity intensifies once again across the state.
