With the announcement of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule just days away, the State’s political arena is witnessing rapid developments, with alliance negotiations and seat-sharing talks gathering momentum. In a major political development, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has officially joined the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth visited Anna Arivalayam and met Chief Minister M. K. Stalin to formally confirm the alliance. The meeting took place in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Minister K.N. Nehru, L.K. Sutheesh and senior DMK functionaries.
The announcement comes amid intense political activity, as parties accelerate alliance building and constituency negotiations. Though Premalatha had earlier indicated that the party’s alliance decision would be announced in January, talks had remained inconclusive, fuelling speculation. There were also unconfirmed reports suggesting possible discussions between DMDK and AIADMK.
Putting an end to speculation, Premalatha told reporters that the decision to align with the DMK was taken following requests from party executives and district administrators.
“Today we have officially answered the question of which alliance DMDK will be part of. We have joined the DMK alliance based on the wishes of our cadre,” she said.
She noted that such an alliance had been politically discussed even in 2016 during the lifetime of party founder Vijayakanth. Recalling past remarks of late DMK patriarch Karunanidhi, she said the alliance had now materialised, albeit in Vijayakanth’s absence.
Premalatha announced that a DMDK committee would soon be constituted to hold seat-sharing talks with the DMK. The final allocation of constituencies would be announced after discussions between leaders of both parties.
Expressing confidence, she said the alliance would secure a decisive mandate. “Our alliance will win more than 200 seats and form the government,” she asserted, adding that the DMK leadership had also assured appropriate political representation for DMDK, including a Rajya Sabha opportunity.
In a post on X, Premalatha shared photographs of her meeting with the Chief Minister and called for joint efforts to continue the Dravidian model of governance and ensure Tamil Nadu’s all-round progress.
The development is seen as a significant boost to the DMK-led front ahead of the elections.
