Residents of Coimbatore woke up to an unusual sight on Wednesday morning as three elephants, which had strayed out of the Western Ghats, were spotted bathing and playing in a pond near IT Park. According to forest officials, the elephants are believed to have wandered nearly 40 kilometres from the hills during the night and lost their way before entering the residential area. Early in the morning, locals noticed the herd roaming near the IT park and alerted the authorities. The elephants soon descended into a nearby pond, where they splashed around, played in the water, and took a refreshing bath.
Videos recorded by residents quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention.
On receiving information, teams from the Forest Department rushed to the spot and began efforts to safely drive the elephants back towards the forest.
Officials said that the operation is being carried out carefully to avoid panic among the animals and ensure public safety.
Forest personnel continue to monitor the movement of the elephants as the drive-back operation progresses.
