The ‘Chennai Ula’ hop-on hop-off tourist bus service, introduced by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Limited, commenced operations on Friday, offering residents and tourists a low-cost opportunity to explore the city’s heritage and major landmarks.
The service was formally flagged off on January 14 by Tamil Nadu Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar with the aim of promoting tourism and familiarising people with Chennai’s ancient, historical and cultural significance. Five buses have been introduced in the first phase of the scheme.
According to officials, the buses operate on a circular route of about 30 km, linking prominent historical, cultural and entertainment destinations located in and around the heart of the city.
The route covers 16 key locations, including Marina Beach, the Government Museum at Egmore, the Madras Lighthouse and the Kannagi Statue. Passengers can get down at any stop and board another bus using the same ticket.
The all-day ticket is priced at Rs. 50 and allows unlimited travel on all five buses throughout the day. Tickets are available at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station, Chennai Egmore railway station, Marina Beach and directly from conductors. Digital tickets can also be purchased through the Chennai One mobile application.
Transport officials said the initiative is aimed at making city tourism affordable and accessible while highlighting Chennai’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
