In a remarkable rescue operation, four wild elephants were safely saved after falling into an open well inside the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary located in Baloda Bazar–Bhatapara district of Chhattisgarh.
According to forest department officials, the elephants had strayed into the Barnawapara forest area during the night before yesterday. Due to poor visibility and the absence of protective walls around the well, all four elephants accidentally slipped inside.
Upon receiving the alert, the Forest Department and Fire and Rescue personnel rushed to the spot and began a coordinated rescue effort. Using heavy machinery, including a JCB, the team created an earthen slope along the well, allowing the elephants to climb out safely. Arun Kumar Pandey, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), said, “The well had no fencing or boundary, which led to the mishap. Our team worked through the night, and with careful coordination, all the elephants were rescued without any injuries.”
The rescued elephants were later monitored by veterinarians and found to be in good health before being released back into the forest area. Forest authorities have appealed to villagers near wildlife zones to cover or fence open wells to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing the importance of coexistence and safety in human-elephant conflict-prone regions.
