Free bus travel scheme extended to 335 suburban buses in Erode

Collector S. Kandasamy flagged off the expanded ‘Vetri Payanam’ free bus travel scheme for women at the Erode Central Bus Stand on Friday. He also distributed free travel tickets to women passengers travelling on the buses.
Under the expanded scheme, women and transgender persons can travel free of cost on suburban ordinary buses, in addition to the city ordinary buses already covered under the scheme. The extension covers express, LSS, deluxe, inter-district ordinary and hill-route ordinary services.
In Erode region, the facility has been extended to 335 suburban buses operating on important routes, including Erode–Gobi, Erode–Sathy, Erode–Namakkal, Erode–Rasipuram, Erode–Salem, Erode–Karur, Erode–Anthiyur and Erode–Kodumudi.
The expanded service is expected to benefit women travelling to colleges, workplaces, hospitals and for other essential purposes. Around 3.25 lakh women are already using the free travel facility daily in city buses in the region.
Erode Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain, TNSTC Erode Region General Manager Muthukumarasamy, Deputy Manager (Commercial) Rajendran and other officials participated in the programme.
