GCC Launches Dedicated Online Service for Pets and Stray Dogs in Chennai

In a pioneering move for animal welfare and civic efficiency, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched an upgraded online platform integrating pet microchipping, licensing, and vaccination tracking — marking the first such initiative in India by a municipal body.

The new digital service, unveiled yesterday by Mayor R. Priya (Priya Rajan) at the Ripon Building in Chennai, aims to streamline key operations such as sterilization of stray dogs, rabies vaccination, and licensing of pets within the city limits.

Speaking at the launch event, Mayor Priya said the initiative aligns with the Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998, under which pet owners residing within the GCC limits are required to obtain a license for their animals.

“The Greater Chennai Corporation has been issuing pet licenses since August 2003. Pet owners can now easily upload their photo, address proof, pet photo, and rabies vaccination certificate and pay a nominal fee of ₹50 online to get their license,” the Mayor said.

Between 2024 and September 2025, the civic body has issued 12,393 pet licenses, reflecting growing awareness among Chennai residents.

The enhanced online system — available at www.chennaicorporation.gov.in — now integrates microchip registration and license payments, making the process quicker and more transparent.

According to GCC officials, the platform will also strengthen efforts to control the stray dog population by ensuring effective sterilization and vaccination drives. This, they said, will improve both animal welfare and public health safety across Chennai.
