A giant boulder rolled down from the Western Ghats at Ettimadai near Madukkarai in Coimbatore district, triggering panic among residents of the area.
According to local residents, a loud noise was heard from the hilltop, following which they rushed outside and witnessed a massive boulder rolling down the hillside at high speed. Fortunately, there were no houses along its path, preventing any loss of life or damage to property.
With the southwest monsoon bringing heavy rainfall to Coimbatore district over the past few days, residents suspect the continuous rain may have triggered the rockfall. They have urged the authorities to conduct a detailed inspection to ascertain whether the incident was caused by heavy rainfall or any other geological factors.
Residents have also appealed to the concerned departments to undertake an immediate scientific assessment of the hill slope, identify the exact cause of the rockfall and implement preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
