The Green Tamil Nadu Movement Day was observed across Coimbatore district today with mass sapling plantation drives. District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar, IAS, led the campaign by planting saplings at Periyanam in Periyanayakkanpalayam Town Panchayat, Anna Industrial Estate in Kittampalayam (Sulur Block), and Kuralvanam in Kaniyur Panchayat Union.
Senior officials including Additional Collector (Development) Sanket Balwant Waghe, IAS, Conservator of Forests Akella Chaitanya Madhavudu, IFS, Assistant Director (Town Councils) Mrs. Manoranjitham, Periyanayakkanpalayam Town Council Chairman Mr. Vishwa Prakash, Sulur Block Development Officer Mr. Muthuraj, and NGO representatives joined the event.
Addressing reporters, the Collector said September 24 is observed annually as Green Tamil Nadu Movement Day. “The mission aims to increase Tamil Nadu’s forest cover to 33 percent within the next 10 years. Sapling plantations are being carried out in every district with the support of all departments,” he explained.
In Coimbatore district alone, today’s drive saw 15,000 saplings planted by the Rural and Urban Development Department, 26,257 by the Town Panchayats Department, and 1,000 by the Corporation. College students also participated, lending strong community support.
The Collector added that under the Green Tamil Nadu Movement, a target of 13 lakh saplings has been set for Coimbatore this year. “This massive plantation drive will help Coimbatore emerge as a green district and contribute to the state’s sustainability goals,” he emphasized.
