Honeymoon fallout leads to double tragedy

A honeymoon dispute followed by dowry harassment allegations led to a devastating chain of events, ending in the suicide of a newlywed man in Nagpur days after his wife died by suicide in Bengaluru.
Suraj Shivanna, 26, an online delivery entrepreneur from Vidyaranyapura in Bengaluru, married Kanvi, 26, an MBA graduate, on October 29.
After spending a few days together in the city, the couple left for a 10-day honeymoon in Sri Lanka.
During the trip, Suraj allegedly discovered details about Kanvi’s pre-marital relationship, leading to repeated arguments. The couple returned to Bengaluru within five days. Soon after, Kanvi moved to her parents’ house following differences with her husband and his family.
Last week, Kanvi allegedly attempted suicide at her parental home. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors said she had suffered severe brain damage. Despite intensive treatment, she died, triggering outrage as the incident occurred less than two months after her marriage. Kanvi’s family accused Suraj and his mother Jayanthi, 60, of dowry harassment and mental cruelty. Based on their complaint, Bengaluru police registered a case against Suraj for abetment of suicide. Relatives and supporters also staged a protest outside Suraj’s residence, demanding the arrest of Suraj and his mother.
Police said that fearing arrest and continued pressure, Suraj left Bengaluru along with his mother, brother Sanjay, and a pet dog. The family first travelled to Hyderabad and later proceeded to Nagpur. On December 26, they checked into a hotel on Wardha Road.
Later that night, Suraj was found hanging in the hotel room. On discovering her son’s body, Jayanthi attempted suicide, but survived after the rope snapped. Hotel staff alerted the police, and both were rushed to hospital. Doctors declared Suraj dead, while Jayanthi is undergoing treatment.
Police have sent Suraj’s body for post-mortem and questioned his brother. Investigations are ongoing.
