India’s first hydrogen-powered ferry service was inaugurated yesterday on the Ganga in Varanasi by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
The launch marks a major step in the Centre’s efforts to modernize inland waterways and promote green mobility.
The service was introduced at the NaMo Ghat (NaMo Padithurai) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency.
Uttar Pradesh Ministers of State Dayashankar Singh, Dayashankar Mishra ‘Dayalu’, and Ravindra Jaiswal were present at the event.
Speaking after the launch, Minister Sonowal said the service represents a significant technological milestone.
“For the first time in the country, a hydrogen-powered ferry has been launched.
This is not just a technological advancement, but a sign that India is moving confidently towards green energy with indigenous expertise,” he said.
India now joins nations such as China, Norway, the Netherlands, and Japan in operating hydrogen-powered vessels.
Sonowal added that this achievement reflects India’s readiness for the future and the rapid progress made in various sectors under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
The Centre’s plan focuses on enhancing waterway connectivity, reducing travel time and transport costs, and boosting economic growth through sustainable energy solutions.
