ISRO Tour Inspires Coimbatore Government School Students

To promote scientific awareness among government school students, the Coimbatore District unit of the Tamil Nadu Science Movement organised an educational tour to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Thiruvananthapuram. A total of 55 government school students, accompanied by their guide teachers, are participating in the programme.

The tour was flagged off on June 16 by Professor Lenin Bharathi, Guide Teacher of the Innovation Discovery Centre at the Coimbatore Regional Science Centre. The students later departed for Thiruvananthapuram by bus.

Professor Prabhakaran, President of the Coimbatore District Tamil Nadu Science Movement, presided over the event. District Secretary Mani and District Treasurer Viswanathan coordinated the travel arrangements.

During the visit, students will tour the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station (TERLS), which operates under the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), a major ISRO facility. They will also visit the TERLS Space Museum, established in a historic church that played a key role in India’s early space missions.

An interactive session with ISRO scientist and writer Sasikumar has also been arranged. Students will have the opportunity to learn about space research, rocket technology and careers in science.

A major highlight of the tour is witnessing the launch of the RH-200 sounding rocket from the Thumba launch facility, an experience expected to strengthen students’ interest in space science and research.
