Inter-State bus services from Coimbatore to Kerala were disrupted on Wednesday following a nationwide general strike backed by Kerala State transport employees.
Government buses operating from the Ukkadam bus stand to various destinations in Kerala remained off the roads, affecting hundreds of passengers.
The strike, called to press for the repeal of four labour codes, received full support from Kerala government transport staff, leading to suspension of services.
Buses scheduled to operate from depots located along the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border were halted within the depots and did not commence trips.
As a result, services to key Kerala cities including Palakkad, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam were cancelled for the day.
Passengers who arrived at the Ukkadam bus stand from early morning faced severe inconvenience.
Those holding advance reservations, daily wage earners and travellers with urgent commitments were forced to seek alternative modes of transport.
Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses operated only up to the Kerala border, with no services running beyond the inter-State boundary.
This led to additional congestion at border check-posts as stranded passengers attempted to cross over by private vehicles.
Transport Department officials advised commuters to verify service status before commencing travel.
