Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) on Sunday hosted the 10th edition of the Covai Heart Rhythm Summit (CHRS) — Cardiac Update 2025, highlighting major advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
Arrhythmias, disorders of the heart’s electrical system, are rising sharply due to increasing cases of myocardial infarction, heart failure, and an ageing population. Experts at the summit emphasised the growing need for advanced cardiac electrophysiology services.
KMCH has been at the forefront of arrhythmia care in Tamil Nadu. It was the first in the State to establish a Centre of Excellence for Atrial Fibrillation (AF) and launched an exclusive AF Clinic last year.
The hospital also introduced cutting-edge technologies such as the Cryoablation System and Ensite X System, becoming the first in Tamil Nadu to offer Cryoablation therapy. Today, KMCH stands among India’s busiest centres for AF ablation and complex arrhythmia management.
The Division of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology at KMCH includes specialised medical and paramedical teams who provide personalised treatment. Its modern Electrophysiology Lab handles procedures such as permanent pacemaker implantations—including MRI-compatible devices, conduction system pacing and leadless pacemakers.
The 10th CHRS conference featured more than 20 national faculty members and saw the participation of over 200 doctors. Organising Secretary Dr. M. Lawrance Jesuraj said the summit was designed to showcase the latest advances in arrhythmia management. “As in previous years, this academic gathering brought together experts of great repute,” he said.
KMCH Executive Director Dr. Arun N. Palaniswami, who inaugurated the summit, pointed out the challenges in treating arrhythmia patients, including delayed diagnosis and late referrals.
He said such conferences help increase awareness among both physicians and the public. Early diagnosis and timely treatment, he noted, can reduce long-term healthcare costs and prevent complications.
KMCH Chairman Dr. Nalla G. Palaniswami said the rising elderly population will likely increase the incidence of arrhythmias. Over the past nine years, the summit has introduced new treatment approaches and strengthened the field. “The Division of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology at KMCH has been a pioneer in arrhythmia management and knowledge dissemination. This year marks a decade of the Covai Heart Rhythm Summit,” he said.
