In a tragic and emotionally charged incident from Maharashtra’s Nanded district, Aanchal Mamidwar married the body of her murdered lover, Saksham Tate, declaring that their bond would endure beyond his death. Aanchal and Saksham had been in a relationship for nearly three years, after being introduced through her brother. Their love deepened as Saksham frequently visited her home. However, the couple belonged to different castes, leading to fierce opposition from her family, who issued repeated threats in an attempt to break them apart.
Police reports state that when Aanchal’s family learned she intended to marry Saksham, her father, Gajanan Mamidwar, and her brothers Himesh and Sahil allegedly kidnapped him last Thursday. They reportedly beat him brutally, shot him, and then smashed his head with stones, resulting in his death. Overwhelmed by grief, Aanchal left her home and went straight to the funeral. In a symbolic act of defiance and devotion, she performed traditional bridal rituals before Saksham’s body—applying turmeric to her skin, placing saffron on her forehead, and declaring herself his wife.
She vowed to live the rest of her life in Saksham’s home as his widow, embracing his family as her own.
Speaking through tears, Aanchal said, “Even though Saksham is gone, our love has not died. In the end, our love won. My father and brothers tried to separate us, but they failed. Those who killed him should be given the death penalty.”
Police have registered a case of honour killing against the accused family members. The shocking incident has triggered outrage across Maharashtra, reigniting demands for stronger measures to prevent caste-based violence and protect couples who choose inter-caste relationships.
