In a significant social reform move, Soundala village in Nevasa taluk of Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar district has officially declared itself a “caste-free village”, adopting the motto “Aamchi Jaat… Manav” (My Caste is Humanity).
The historic resolution was passed unanimously at the gram sabha meeting held on February 5, making Soundala one of the first villages in the country to formally reject caste identity in public life.
Villagers across communities, including Hindus and Muslims, participated in the meeting and supported the resolution.
Residents said the decision reflects their long-standing belief that humanity is above caste and religion.
The resolution states that no one in the village should practice or promote caste-based discrimination, and that equality and human values will guide community life.
Soundala has earlier been recognised for progressive measures, including action against child marriage, support for widow remarriage, opposition to dowry and domestic violence, promotion of women’s education and encouraging women’s participation in local governance.
In 2007, the village received an award for being dispute-free. Villagers say true progress lies not in rhetoric, but in implementation — a principle they claim to have upheld through collective action.
