Coimbatore District Police have arrested a 44-year-old man for illegally releasing the film Jana Nayagan without obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification.
The accused, Subbanan Palanisamy of Ram Nagar on Somanur Main Road in Karumathampatti, was running a local channel named Raasi Prime Movie within the jurisdiction of the Karumathampatti police station. He had allegedly aired the film on April 11 despite it awaiting censor certification.
The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Mohana Priya, Deputy Secretary of Coimbatore Suburban East District of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
Acting on the directions of Superintendent of Police Dr. K. Karthikeyan, two special teams were formed and an investigation was carried out.
The inquiry revealed that the film was broadcast for public viewing through an internet link shared illegally on the Raasi Prime Movie channel.
Karumathampatti Police Inspector Vadivel Kumar arrested Subbanan Palanisamy, who was later produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
Police also seized a computer, five hard disks and other electronic devices used in the offence. The office of the Raasi TV channel has been sealed for illegally screening the uncertified film. Coimbatore District Police have warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in piracy and unlawful sharing of copyrighted content online.
The public has been urged to report such activities to the nearest police station or through police helplines.
