A controversial police operation in a slum area of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, has sparked widespread outrage after a video showed a policeman scanning a resident’s back with a mobile phone and claiming it could identify him as a Bangladeshi national.
The incident took place on December 23 when a team of Uttar Pradesh Police personnel conducted a verification drive in the locality to check for alleged illegal Bangladeshi migrants.
During the search, residents were asked to produce identity documents, including Aadhaar cards, which were reportedly shown to the officers.
In the video, which has since gone viral, a policeman is seen pressing his mobile phone against the back of a man and moving it as if scanning a barcode.
The officer is heard telling onlookers that the scan would reveal the man’s address and confirm whether he was from Bangladesh.
The unusual act drew shock and disbelief among residents present at the scene.
Roshni, a relative of the man subjected to the scan, told reporters that the police team was led by the local Station House Officer. She alleged that the policemen sarcastically claimed to have brought a special device to detect Bangladeshis.
“There was no machine. They just rubbed their phones on my brother-in-law’s back and said it would expose his origin,” she said.
The family stated that they have been residing in the area since 1986 and originally belong to Araria district in Bihar.
After verifying the documents, the police left without taking any further action.
The video has triggered strong reactions on social media, with many describing the act as humiliating and degrading.
The policeman involved later defended his conduct, claiming it was meant to extract the truth, further intensifying public
criticism.
