In a major breakthrough, police have arrested three members of a robbery gang from Nagpur, Maharashtra, who escaped with 10 pounds of gold jewellery after attacking a workshop employee in Coimbatore last month.
The incident occurred on September 12, when Subomangshi, a worker from West Bengal employed at a gold jewellery workshop on Variety Hall Road, was carrying jewellery to another shop. A four-member gang intercepted him en route, sprayed anesthetic liquid on his face, and robbed him after he collapsed unconscious. The gang escaped with the jewellery in a car bearing a Maharashtra registration number.
Following a complaint, the V.H. Road Police registered a case and launched an investigation. A special seven-member police team was formed, which tracked the gang’s movements to Nagpur. After a week-long surveillance operation, police surrounded the suspects hiding in a house and arrested three of them.
The arrested men have been identified as Yashim Ali (57), Mohammed Fareed (25), and Gurbani (27), all residents of Yerkheda, Nagpur. Police are still on the lookout for the gang leader, Salim Ali, who remains absconding.
The three arrested accused were brought back to Coimbatore and produced in court, after which they were remanded in judicial custody.
Police sources said efforts are on to nab the remaining gang members and recover the stolen jewellery.
