A controversy erupted on the first day of the winter session after Congress Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury entered the Parliament premises in a car where her aide was seen holding a dog on his lap. The incident immediately attracted media attention and soon turned into a political flashpoint.
When questioned by journalists, the aide responded sharply: “Doesn’t anyone like animals? A harmless creature climbed into the vehicle. Who has a problem with that? This is not a biting animal. There are other biting animals inside Parliament. There are no safety restrictions for this. If there are, we will follow them.”
He further explained that the puppy had been rescued just moments earlier. “On the way, a scooter and a car collided. This puppy was wandering near the accident spot. I feared it might get run over, so I brought it into the car. I’ve already sent it back. Why make an issue out of this?” he said.
The incident caused surprise among MPs inside Parliament and prompted objections from the BJP benches. Several BJP MPs demanded action against Renuka Chowdhury for allegedly violating Parliament protocol.
Senior BJP MP Jagdambika Pal strongly criticised the Congress leader. “She seems to have no concern for members of Parliament. She brings her dog here, and when questioned, gives replies that embarrass the entire country. Action should be taken,” he said.
With the controversy gaining momentum, officials are expected to review whether any security or procedural violations occurred.
