The Salem City Police have clarified the reasons for denying permission for TVK leader Vijay’s proposed campaign in the city on December 4. This is the first petition submitted on his behalf since the Karur crowd crush incident.
In an explanatory letter addressed to TVK functionary Vilar, the police stated that they would face serious difficulty in providing adequate security on December 4, as a large number of personnel are scheduled for deployment in other districts on that day.
The police also pointed out that the petition submitted by the organisers did not include key information—such as the expected number of participants at the event, nor details on how many supporters would be arriving from other districts. Without such mandatory details, the police said, it would not be possible to plan security, traffic control, and crowd management.
The letter further stated that the petition would be reconsidered if organisers submit a revised request addressing these omissions. The police also instructed that all future petitions must be filed at least one week in advance to ensure sufficient time for evaluation.
The clarification comes amid heightened scrutiny of political events in Tamil Nadu following the Karur tragedy, with authorities emphasising stricter safety protocols and complete documentation for public gatherings.
