The indefinite strike by sanitation workers employed under the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) reached its 100th day today, with heavy police security deployed outside the Ripon Building, the civic body’s headquarters.
Workers from Zones 5 and 6 have been protesting against the privatisation of sanitation work, demanding permanent employment, fair wages, and reinstatement of dismissed workers.
Despite multiple rounds of talks involving Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, Mayor R. Priya, and Corporation Commissioner Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, negotiations have failed to yield a settlement.
Earlier, on August 13, police arrested several sanitation workers following a court order, but protests have continued across the city. The workers have held demonstrations at the Marina Beach, Fort St. George, and in front of the Secretariat, drawing attention from civic activists and trade unions.
Recently, the protesters staged a sea protest behind the Kannagi statue on Marina Beach, where they entered the waves carrying placards demanding job security.
The demonstration drew public concern over their safety. As the strike entered its 100th day, city police have strengthened deployment around the Ripon Building to prevent unrest.
Authorities fear the agitation may intensify if talks do not resume soon.
The strike has disrupted garbage collection in several localities, prompting residents to urge the government for a speedy resolution to the ongoing
crisis.
