The Tamil Nadu Animal Husbandry Department has imposed strict restrictions on horse riding activities at beaches and major tourist destinations, including Ooty and Kodaikanal, following the spread of Glanders infection among horses in Chennai.
The decision was taken after Health Minister Dr. Arunraj chaired a review meeting with officials at the Secretariat regarding preventive measures to control the bacterial disease affecting horses.
According to an official statement issued by the department, horses showing symptoms such as fever, cough, nasal discharge, skin lesions and breathing difficulties should not be used for riding activities.
Horse owners have been instructed to avoid unnecessary movement of animals, isolate infected horses and ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of stables and equipment.
Restrictions have also been enforced on horse riding activities at several beaches in Chennai. Horse operators at tourist destinations, including Ooty and Kodaikanal, have been directed to strictly follow the safety and health guidelines issued by the department.
