Swara Tharangini Interschool bhajan competition launched in Coimbatore

Swara Tharangini, an interschool bhajan singing competition inspired by the vision of the Art of Living Foundation, was inaugurated in Coimbatore with devotional fervour, drawing participation from more than 500 school students from across the region.
The inauguration began with a welcome session highlighting the importance of reviving the ancient Indian tradition of collective bhajan singing among children. Speakers stressed that such practices help instil discipline, emotional balance and unity through music.

The initiative is inspired by the teachings of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who has repeatedly emphasised the role of collective singing in fostering harmony and inner well-being.
Ms Sitara Vikram, Tamil Nadu Apex Body member of the Art of Living Foundation and Founder of CS Academy, delivered the welcome address. She spoke about the present generation often being described as the “anxious generation”, growing up under academic pressure, constant digital exposure and emotional stress. She said bhajans offer a simple and effective remedy, as collective singing naturally calms the mind, regulates breathing and brings emotional stability. According to her, devotional music is not just a cultural tradition but a powerful tool for children’s mental and emotional well-being.
A major highlight of the event was the release of the Swara Tharangini Bhajan Journal, designed as a year-long guide for participating students. The journal encourages regular practice through monthly themes, festival-based bhajans and reflection sections, helping children stay connected with devotional music beyond the competition.
The organisers also launched the Swara Tharangini website, a dedicated digital platform aimed at supporting bhajan learning, participation and community interaction, thereby strengthening the initiative’s long-term impact.
Organisers thanked sponsors, schools, parents and volunteers for their support and reiterated their commitment to passing on India’s rich devotional and cultural heritage to the younger generation. The event concluded on an uplifting note, marking a meaningful beginning to a celebration of music, values and togetherness.
