Tamil Nadu BESS Policy Hailed as Boost to Affordable Power

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumers’ Association (TECA) has welcomed the Tamil Nadu Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Policy 2026, describing it as a major step towards energy security, better renewable energy utilisation and affordable electricity.
In a press statement dated November 6, TECA president L. Santhosh said the policy would help store surplus solar and wind power and supply it during evening peak hours, improving grid stability and reducing dependence on expensive short-term power purchases.
The policy targets at least 2.5 GW or 10 GWh of battery storage during its implementation period. New eligible solar and solar-hybrid projects of 1 MW and above must install storage equivalent to at least 10 per cent of their capacity, with four-hour discharge capability. Eligible battery storage projects will receive a 100 per cent waiver of transmission and wheeling charges for 10 years, subject to conditions.
TECA noted that TNPDCL is expected to procure 2,500 MW or 10,000 MWh of storage capacity through competitive bidding in the first phase.
The association urged the Government to ensure transparent procurement, pass on savings to industrial and commercial consumers, strengthen transmission networks and prevent additional tariff burdens. It also called for regular monitoring of costs, efficiency and performance.
L. Santhosh said the policy’s success should be measured by lower electricity costs and reliable power supply to industries at competitive tariffs.
