Tiger attack near Ooty claims tribal elder, Pine forest closed

A 58-year-old tribal man was killed in a tiger attack near Ooty, prompting authorities to intensify surveillance and temporarily close key tourist spots in the Nilgiris district.
The deceased was identified as Bhuthalkuttan of Thodarinam. He was attacked by a tiger in the Chinnakadu Mund area near Chandanamalla.
Following the incident, residents staged a road blockade demanding immediate compensation for the victim’s family and the capture of the tiger. The protest was withdrawn after officials assured swift action.
Assistant Conservator of Forests, Nilgiris Division, Manimaran handed over an immediate relief of Rs. 10 lakh to the family, including Rs. 50,000 in cash and a cheque for Rs. 9.50 lakh.
Forest officials said the suspected tiger movement zone is being closely monitored using thermal drone cameras. Automatic camera traps have also been installed at multiple locations to track the animal’s movement. Field staff and anti-poaching watchers have intensified patrolling in and around Chinnakadu Mund. Safety advisories have been issued to residents in vulnerable hamlets.
As a precautionary measure, the popular eco-tourism destinations Pine Forest and Shooting Range in Ooty have been temporarily closed until further notice, officials added.
