TNEB workers’ Union Urges Appointment of all 8,073 Qualified field assistants

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Janatha Workers’ Union has urged the State Government and the Electricity Board to appoint all 8,073 candidates who cleared the Field Assistant recruitment examination, instead of limiting the initial recruitment to a smaller number. In a statement, S. Sasangan, State Deputy General Secretary of the union, welcomed the government’s recent order to recruit 5,000 ITI-qualified candidates in 2027 and another 3,000 in 2028 to fill vacant Field Assistant posts.
He said more than 35,000 vacancies existed in the field division of the Electricity Board, resulting in delays in routine maintenance work across distribution sections. He pointed out that the staff shortage had contributed to frequent power interruptions, supply disruptions and accidents, causing inconvenience to the public. Following the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission notification issued on September 3, 2025, a recruitment examination was conducted on November 16, 2025. On May 14, 2026, the 8,073 successful candidates were informed of their results through email.
However, the union said it had learnt that only around 1,700 candidates were being considered for the physical efficiency and qualification tests, leaving the remaining successful candidates uncertain about their appointments. Sasangan urged the government and the Electricity Board to appoint all 8,073 qualified candidates without conducting another recruitment process, stating that fresh examinations and procedures would cause further delays and additional expenditure for both the government and applicants.
