UGC initiates trilingual policy

Tamil Nadu has been following a two-language policy since 1968. That is, in Tamil Nadu, Tamil is taught as the primary language and English as the second language. Now, the Central government is suddenly saying that a third language should be taught, which has created a problem.
If it is a third language, it does not mean French, Spanish, Latin, German, etc. You have to learn one of the Indian languages like Hindi, Sanskrit, Telugu. “What is wrong if you learn a third language?” BJP members ask, “That is not possible. We have made progress internationally by learning two languages. It has been scientifically proven that teaching a third language does not improve the quality of education,” not only the Tamil Nadu government, but also Tamil Nadu educators are expressing their opinion by citing research reports.
In this situation, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued guidelines to make trilingualism mandatory in colleges and universities. This is not the job of the UGC. Whether we give money for education, conduct exams… or not. Education is on the common list of the Central and State governments. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government has clearly said that we will decide what we want.
The Supreme Court has mentioned this in its orders several times. For example, in the 2008 case of Ashok Kumar Thakur against the Central Government, the court clearly stated the powers of the UGC. The UGC has the power to improve the quality of education. That is, the UGC has the power to fix minimum educational standards in universities and colleges, conduct examinations, etc. But it has said that the UGC has no power in matters of ‘policy’.
That is why, how can the UGC order universities and colleges regarding trilingualism? The question has become universal. There can be no alternative to the fact that the UGC’s announcement is a matter of policy. It has unnecessarily stuck its nose in the name of trilingualism. Tamil Nadu will never accept that announcement. Tamil Nadu educators and students will never accept it. Therefore, the UGC should immediately withdraw its announcement.
