A booth-level officer engaged in the intensive voter list revision in Uttar Pradesh died by suicide, bringing to light the heavy workload faced by government staff involved in election preparations across several states.
With Assembly elections nearing in 12 states — including Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh — the Election Commission has intensified the electoral roll revision process.
Teachers, anganwadi workers and other government employees have been deployed as polling station officers, many of whom have reported severe workload and long
hours.
In Moradabad district, Uttar Pradesh, Sarvesh Singh, a schoolteacher appointed as a booth officer, had been working continuously on voter roll revisions since October 7.
Officials said he was under extreme stress due to the demanding deadline.
Yesterday, Sarvesh was found hanging in his room at his residence. His wife, on returning home, opened the locked door and discovered the tragic scene. Police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.
A suicide note seized by police revealed that despite working day and night, Sarvesh was unable to meet the deadline for the intensive revision process. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
