Senior Communist Party of India leader R. Nallakannu passed away in Chennai on Tuesday following age-related ailments. He was 101.
Nallakannu had been admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital after his health deteriorated due to complications associated with old age. Hospital sources said several of his vital organs had been affected, and despite intensive medical care, his condition worsened in the past few days. He was shifted to the intensive care unit, where a team of doctors closely monitored him. Leaders from various political parties, including Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, visited the hospital to inquire about his health.
The hospital officially announced that Nallakannu breathed his last at 1.55 p.m. due to multi-organ failure. A veteran Communist leader known for his simplicity and lifelong commitment to farmers’ rights, social justice and public causes, Nallakannu remained active in public life for decades. His passing marks the end of an era in Tamil Nadu politics.
Condolences poured in from leaders across party lines, who hailed him as a principled leader and a steadfast voice for the working class.
